We drove up to Carter Mountain over the weekend and had an apple picking day with the fam. It was quite literally the perfect day. Beautiful weather and the scenery was postcard worthy!
I usually make pies or applesauce from our handpicked apples. This year I wanted to switch things up a bit and give it a more “sophisticated” look. Now that I’ve developed a few recipes, I’m feeling fancy over here, ha!
The apple galette is nothing more than an open-faced pie with a fluffy/flaky crust, and honestly I prefer it. Mmm so yummy!
Did I mention it only takes about 30 minutes to make?? Pretty simple if you buy the puff pastry ahead of time.
For The Crust:
- Puff Pastry
For The Filling:
- 4 medium apples
- 3 tbs sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 nutmeg
- 4 tbs butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 1 egg, for eggwash
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
- Caramel for drizzle (optional)
Preheat oven to 375°. Line baking tray with parchment paper.
Roll your dough and cut out three even rectangles using a pizza cuter. Place dough onto prepared baking tray.
Core your apples. Cut them in half. Continue to slice the halves into very thin slices (as thin as you can get them). Fan each half out by pressing it slightly and place onto the tart.
In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apples. Place the pieces of butter over the apples. Fold in the excess dough (around the edges) over the apples, folding every 3-4 inches as you go around.
Mix egg with 1 tbs water and 1 tsp of vanilla extract. Brush over crust. Bake for 30 minutes, until the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown. Serve with caramel drizzle and vanilla ice cream!
